Light has been a part of Christmas since it began. The wise men and shepherds followed the star to see the Christ child in his cradle, and before electricity was invented, candles and Advent wreaths were used to celebrate the nativity season. With electricity at our fingertips, we are able to really make beautiful Christmas displays using lights, and metro Detroit has some great Christmas light filled attractions.
As we all know, the Christmas season can become expensive, so here are 5 fun Christmas light displays in metro Detroit you can visit with your family for $10 or less this year:
This is a festival of lights located in Westland, MI. It is a four and a half mile drive down Hines Drive, and it is the “…Midwest’s longest drive-through holiday light display” (Michigan Life). Even better? You can find Santa Claus in his workshop at the end. This costs $5 per vehicle to enter the drive.
Lakeshore Drive
Located in Grosse Pointe, this free drive is filled with homes decked out with Christmas lights. The Awesome Mitten describes it, “We saw a lot of great displays but the area that always blew me away was Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe.” So, hop into your car and head over to the east side for festive holiday fun.
This light display is located at one individual house. It consists of over 60,000 lights that are all synchronized to music and perform a timed light show. This runs December 2 through January 1 from 5:30-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 5:30-11 on the weekends. You can drive over with your family for free and sip hot chocolate from the warmth of your car while enjoying the show. Tune into 88.5 FM to hear the music.
The Big Bright Light Show-Rochester
During the holiday season downtown Rochester turns into a magical winter wonderland. All of the stores will be decked in over a million twinkling lights. Take your family to check it out any night this month.
Campus Martius- Downtown Detroit
Check out the enormous 60 foot Christmas tree either on foot or on ice skates. You can enjoy the sight of the tree for free, and you can skate on the ice rink at Campus Martius park from now until March. Ice skating costs $8 for adults and $7 for kids 12 and under (Oakland County Moms).
When visiting these light displays, or putting up your own Christmas lights, please, remember that though lights are fun to look at, electricity can still be dangerous and you should always use proper care when decorating your own home with lights.
