8 Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Detroit

8 Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Detroit

April showers might be necessary for those May flowers, but that doesn’t mean we don’t feel cooped up on yet another rainy spring weekend.  Thankfully, Detroit and its surrounding areas have plenty to do when rain showers are keeping you inside.

For kids and families

1. Detroit Kid City

Detroit Kid City is an indoor playground that eschews the typical cartoon-ish look of most play areas. Instead, it’s designed to look like a mini old-fashioned Detroit.  Kids can run around while adults can sip on a coffee from the full service espresso bar.  Win-win!

2. Ann Arbor Hands On Museum

As its name suggests, the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum lets kids do what they usually can’t do in a museum–touch the exhibits!  Use a rainy day as an opportunity for some sensory learning for the entire family.

3. Belle Isle Aquarium

The Belle Isle Aquarium is one of the oldest aquariums in the country.  Even if you aren’t interested in marine life, it’s a worthwhile visit just to check out the architecture of the building.  Visiting the aquarium is free, but you do need to purchase a recreation passport in order to go to Belle Isle.

4. Detroit Historical Museum

The Detroit Historical Museum has exhibits for everyone.  From The Streets of Old Detroit, which allow you to be taken back to a much simpler time, to the Kid Rock Music Lab, everyone in your family will enjoy this field trip.

5. DNR Outdoor Adventure Center

Want to be outside on a rainy day without getting wet?  No problem!  Just head to the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center, which brings outdoor Michigan inside.  Go fishing, walk across a rope bridge, and view a waterfall all while staying inside.

For the grown ups

If you are looking for a little kid-free adventure on a rainy day, try one of these activities:

6. Escape Rooms

The Detroit area has a few of these popular escape rooms.  Put your thinking cap on and try to solve the riddles to escape.

7. The DIA

Browse art and grab a coffee at the Kresge Court while the rain pitter patters on the window panes outside.

8. John King Used and Rare Books

They advertise that they have a million books in stock, so you should have no problem filling a day browsing through this bookstore.
