7 Thanksgiving Foods to NOT Put Down the Garbage Disposal

Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the food.  The Pilgrims may not have eaten turkey, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie at the first Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t stop us from enjoying those staples every November.  So, are you on kitchen duty this Turkey Day?  Either for food prep or clean up?  Then keep in mind these foods that should go to the garbage can and not down the garbage disposal in order to avoid any major Thanksgiving dinner hiccups.

7 Thanksgiving Foods that Should NOT Go Down the Garbage Disposal

1. Onion skins

These are fibrous and can cause jams in the disposal.

2. Potato peels

In my opinion, homemade mashed potatoes are the best part of Thanksgiving.  However, as you are peeling away, make sure those peels end up in the trash can and not down the disposal.

3. Turkey bones

The garbage disposal is a powerful machine, but it just can’t handle animal bones.  After everyone has seconds (or thirds) and the rest of the turkey is packed into containers for the a weekend full of leftovers, throw those bones in the garbage please!

4. Pumpkin rinds and seeds

If you are using canned pumpkin for your pie, there’s nothing to worry about.  However, if you are making a pumpkin pie from an actual pumpkin, please not that all of those stringy pumpkin “guts” and seeds should not go near the dishwasher.

5. Nuts

Leftover pecan pie?  Big chunks or whole nuts should not go down the garbage disposal.  Why?  Think of how nut butters are made…  Do you want thick, pasty nut butter all around your disposal blades?

6. Turkey fat

Fat and grease solidifies as it cools and creates clogs in the dishwasher.  Wait until the grease has cooled down and dump it into a can or something similar, and then toss it.

7. Celery

Like potato peels and onion skins, fibrous celery can get tangled up in the disposal blades.  Whether you use it in a veggie tray appetizer or part of your stuffing, into the trash it goes!
