Christmas Tree Safety Tips
For many of us, Thanksgiving weekend kicks off the start of the Christmas season, and we begin starting to put up our Christmas trees. Christmas trees are a wonderful holiday tradition, but they can be hazardous and dangerous. According to the National Safety Council, Christmas trees are the cause of over 250 home fires each holiday season. Therefore, it is important to be careful and make informed decisions about your Christmas tree this year. Here are some tips from the National Safety Council and Allstate as well as the National Fire Protection Association to help.
Fake Trees
Before purchasing a fake tree, check for the manufacturer’s label certifying that it is fire retardant.
Real Trees
It is important to choose a fresh tree with green needles. Another way to tell that the tree is fresh is by checking if the trunk is sticky from sap. If so, then you are good to go!
Cut 1-2″ off from the trunk off the tree before placing it in water in your home. The tree should be watered daily to prevent it from drying out quickly.
When deciding on place for the tree, keep in mind that it should be at least 3 feet away from any heat sources (lights, fire places, candles, radiators etc…)
Decorations
Do not use lit candles on the tree.
Check for the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) label on your lights and make sure that indoor lights are being used for inside and outdoor lights for outside.
It is important to replace any light strands with broken or frayed wires or cracked sockets. Also, for mini lights, do not connect more than 3 strands of lights. Check the directions for LED lights.
Do not put extension cords under rugs.
Lastly, turn the tree of before going to bed or leaving the home.
Follow these instructions to ensure that your family’s Christmas is merry and safe! Check out the National Safety Council tips or the National Fire Protection Agency Website for more information!
