How to Have Clean Air in Your Home

We all want to breathe in fresh, clean air. Unfortunately, that is not always possible. We know that certain places have dirtier air than others, and things like secondhand smoke, mold, and asbestos can cause problems in the air. But many of us may be polluting the air in our homes without even realizing it.

Cleaning products can emit harmful chemicals into the air. The American Lung Association states, “Some products release dangerous chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Other harmful ingredients include ammonia and bleach. Even natural fragrances such as citrus can react to produce dangerous pollutants indoors.”

So, while we may be cleaning our homes and trying to freshen the air with air fresheners, we are causing even more problems. Here is a list of cleaning products to be aware of:

  • Aerosol spray products, including health, beauty, and cleaning products;
  • Air fresheners;
  • Chlorine bleach;
  • Detergent and dishwashing liquid;
  • Dry cleaning chemicals;
  • Rug and upholstery cleaners;
  • Furniture and floor polish; and
  • Oven cleaners.1, 2

To have clean air, should we not clean our homes anymore? Of course not. The American Lung Association recommends using natural cleaners such as warm water and soap, baking soda, and vinegar. Also, remember that ventilation is critical- open windows while using strong cleaning products.

Installing an air purifier in your home is another way to keep the air fresh and clean. Certain air purifiers can be installed right in your ductwork.  For more information about air purifiers and indoor air quality, contact FLAME!
