A Healthy Indoor Air Quality Baby Registry

Babies are small and don’t take up much space, but as any veteran parent will tell you- their stuff sure does!  Parents of more than one child have often figured out a way to streamline the stuff they actually need for a baby, but if you are a new parent it’s hard to not want to get all of the things in order to feel ultra prepared.  This is why many new parents-to-be create a baby registry.

Looking around at the baby sections of stores is overwhelming.  Who knew there were so many brands of diapers and wipes?  A stroller costs how much?!  What’s the difference between a jumper and a bouncer?  Do I really need that many burp cloths (answer: yes).

When it comes to decorating and filling your nursery with items for your bundle of joy, you want to make sure that everything is as safe as can be, right?  Too often, we forget about the air that our babies will be breathing in their new home.  When choosing items for baby’s room, choose items that will help to keep the air clean.  Here are a few tips for creating a baby registry for good indoor air quality.

  1. Avoid paints with VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)- Volatile Organic Compounds are gases that can come from things such as paints.  According to the EPA VOCs can have effects that range from eye, throat and nose irritation to liver and kidney damage.  When looking to paint your little one’s room that perfect shade of pink or blue look for clean paints without VOCs.
  2. Choose organic bedding, when possible- Medium points out that organic crib bedding and sheets are less likely to have formaldehyde.  So, yes, this is an area where it is a good idea to spring for the organic label.
  3. Buy used furniture-This may seem counterintuitive when you want the very best for your little one, but used furniture may actually be better and safer.  The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says that high levels of formaldehyde can be found in “Some manufactured wood products such as cabinets, furniture, plywood, particleboard, and laminate flooring.”  Buying furniture that is a few years old gives it time to release some of those chemicals before being brought into your home.  However, be sure to make sure that furniture items such as cribs still meet current safety standards.
  4. Purchase and install an air purifier-You can buy a stand alone air purifier that stays in baby’s nursery, or you can have one installed into your duct work.  Having an air purifier installed means that it takes up less floor space and you can be assured of the air your baby is breathing throughout the home, not just in his or her nursery.
  5. Don’t forget a humidifier-humidifier helps a baby sleep soundly and not be bothered by dry air.  It also helps keeps baby’s sensitive skin from getting irritated.  Like an air purifier, you can purchase a small humidifier to keep in the nursery (there are many cute options available), or you can have one installed into your duct work as part of your HVAC system.  Both options have their pros and cons, and you can read more about whole house humidifiers here.
