How to Have an Energy Efficient Halloween in 2020

Like everything else this year, Halloween is going to look a little bit different.  Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, we will not see large indoor Halloween parties, and those cloth masks we are getting to accustomed to will also make their way into our Halloween costumes.  But, that does not mean that Halloween still can’t be fun (and energy efficient)!

In the past, we have shared energy efficient Halloween tips.  These tips allow you to celebrate Halloween while trying to conserve as much energy and money as possible.  This year, despite some of the other differences to Halloween, we can still help you with energy efficient Halloween practices.

But first, the most important thing is to keep you and others safe and healthy.  In order to help you out, here is some advice from the CDC:

• Bring hand sanitizer with you and use it after touching objects or other people.
• Make your cloth mask part of your costume.
• A costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask.
• Do NOT wear a costume mask over a cloth mask. It can make breathing more difficult.
• Give out treats outdoors, if possible.
• Set up a station with individually bagged treats for kids to take.

How to Have an Energy Efficient Halloween:  2020 Edition

1. Pick up some solar powered lights

Use solar powered lights to brighten up your walk for trick or treaters.  Or, place solar powered lights around your yard for a socially distanced small outdoor gathering.

2. Stay outside

One of the main things we often talk about in regard to energy loss on Halloween is the fact that your front door is constantly opening and closing in order to hand out candy–allowing heat to escape.  Since it is safer to interact with other outdoors this year, bundle up and set up shop outside.  This allows you to keep yourself and others safe, while also keeping the heat inside of your home.  Of course, don’t forget to wear your mask and have hand sanitizer available.

3. Nix the party

Hosting parties consumes energy.  Extra electricity, extra water, and extra paper waste.  This year is the year to forego a large traditional Halloween party.  Catch up with friends via FaceTime or Zoom instead.  Safe and energy saving.

4. Re-use your costume

When we buy or make new Halloween costumes each year, that can be pretty wasteful.  While we always recommend re-purposing items and materials from older costumes, it is an especially great idea this year.  Why?  Most likely not as many people will be seeing your costume.  Save up and go big next year!
