Michigan Plumbing Care: Defending Your Plumbing System from the Cold
It is forecasted that there will be downpours of snow in March along with rain showers, which means that plumbing in Michigan homes should be inspected and protected to avoid any pipe freezes, bursts, and other damages that could lead to a lot of inconveniences. Lon Grossman, the president of a southeast Michigan residential and commercial inspection company shares some tips on how to handle plumbing around the house.
On a Vacation
When it comes to preventing pipe freezes and bursts when you’re leaving for a vacation, here’s what Grossman had to say: “When you turn the water off at the meter […] open all the faucets, including any in the basement. That will prevent the pipes from freezing and bursting since there shouldn’t be any water in them.” He also says that to reduce the risk of pipes bursting, the supply lines and spigot should be shut off as well as the main water meter. Use of a specially made antifreeze to be placed in toilet bowls, tanks, and sink traps is also recommended. By following these aforementioned tips, you can be away for a few days without worrying that you’ll come home to a water-damaged home.
On a Staycation
If you’re staying at home during winter, you’ll have to regularly check on the condition of your plumbing pipes or call on a professional from a Michigan plumbing company to do a more thorough inspection—especially if you’re noticing signs of leaks or other plumbing issues. Outside the house, it is advised to disconnect the garden hose and store it until warm weather shows up again. If a hose is left outside, water left inside can freeze and expand, and in the process freeze faucets and connecting pipes as well. Any shut-off valves inside that leads outside should be closed and drained because frozen water could cause considerable damage. Another thing not to forget is the sump pump, whether it is located outdoors or indoors. It has to be cleaned, including the pit, because it can freeze and malfunction due to cold weather.
Snowfall is accompanied by nice, cold weather, but it can also cause a number of problems to the plumbing around the house. It’s always best to be prepared and to avoid any issues that can inconvenience the whole family during or after the cold season.
Snow and cold weather should be enjoyed outside or by the fire, so be worry-free by protecting your plumbing. In case of any frozen pipes, bursts, or other damages, be sure to contact a plumber in Michigan from an established company such as FLAME Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electrical that provides service and repairs and can also help with any installation.
