Plants Help With Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is essential for all of us in our homes and workplaces as this is the air we spend most of our time breathing. With buildings being built much more efficiently now, sometimes the indoor air quality of a home or office can decrease, as there is little way for indoor air to escape and fresher outdoor air to circulate. We can improve indoor air quality through filters, air purifiers, and UV Germicidal lights. Still, this article, “15 Best Plants for Cleaner Indoor Air,” from The Weather Channel by Annie Hauser, discusses that having certain plants inside can help make the air better to breathe.

The list of plants that can help indoor air quality is based on studies done by NASA in the 1980s, and though it is thought that they probably do not have a significant effect on indoor air quality, “every little bit helps.” These are the 15 plants found to best filter out the Volatile Organic Compounds in our indoor air:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Bamboo Palm
  • Chinese Evergreen
  • Elephant Ear
  • Red-edged Dracaena
  • Peace Lily
  • Gerberas
  • English Ivy
  • Golden Pothos
  • Heart-leaf Philodendron
  • Janet Craig
  • Mass Cane
  • Mother-in-law’s Tongue
  • Spider Plant
  • Warnecki
