Preparing for a Flood Checklist

Having water enter your home can be a nightmare.  It can be dangerous, unsanitary, and it is hard to clean up.  Not only that, but when your home floods, you can end up losing valuable and expensive items.

With high water levels in the Great Lakes and plenty of rain still in the forecast in Southeastern Michigan, flooding is a real concern for many.  We can’t always stop Mother Nature from doing what she is going to do, but we can make sure that we are as prepared as possible.  Take a look at our flood checklist and see what steps you still need to complete.

Preparing for a Flood Checklist

1. Check your homeowner’s insurance policy

Many homeowner’s insurance policies make no provision for damage caused by a flood.  Read over your policy and be familiar with what is or isn’t covered.  If you feel that flooding is a significant concern for your home, ask about the possibility of adding additional flood coverage to the policy.

2. Have your sewer drain cleaned

A clogged sewer drain is often the cause of flooding in a home.  If you are starting to notice some tell tale signs of a clog such as gurgling noises and water backing up, don’t hesitate to call a professional right away.

3. Install a sump pump

Many newer homes are already fitted with sump pumps, but if your house does not have one, now could be the time.  These pumps work to pump any water that comes to your basement back out again.

4. Install an automatic back up generator

Automatic back up generators turn on automatically when a power outage is sensed. Thanks to big storms, often times power outages can happen when floods do. This is a problem because sump pumps typically need electricity to operate.  Having a back up generator will help to keep that sump pump running and your basement dry.

5. Consider where you keep important documents

Where do you keep things such as birth certificates and passports?  How about old photographs and school projects?  If these things are usually housed in the basement, make sure to put them in sealed containers and on shelves raised off the ground.  If you have warning of big rainfall coming and potential flood risk, consider temporarily moving some items elsewhere for the time being.
