How to Prevent Christmas Tree Fires

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree…

Thanksgiving is passed, and it is time to deck the halls once again.  There is something so cozy about a decorated and lit Christmas tree, but Christmas trees can come with potential dangers and hazards.  The National Fire Protection Agency states, “Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious.”  These fire dangers can come from electrical sources or open FLAME’s, and it is important to be aware of them.

As you celebrate this holiday season, we would like to help you be sure that your family stays safe.

Keep it Fresh

A fresh tree is way less likely to catch fire than a dry one, so when picking out your Christmas tree this year look for green, flexible needles that won’t easily snap or break.  Also, make sure the trunk has sap.

Keep it Watered

In order to prevent fires, you want to keep your tree as fresh as possible for as long as possible.  This means making sure the tree stays adequately watered.  You should make sure that the tree stand is always filled with water, and add to it every day.

Keep the Tree Away from Heat Sources

This is a big one!  The National Fire Protection Agency recommends that your tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source.  This includes candles, fire places, radiators, lights, vents, and even the television.

Be Careful with the Lights

When stringing up the lights make sure that the cord is intact and not frayed or broken.  It should have been tested by a scientific laboratory such as UL.  Turn off the lights whenever you leave the house or head to bed.

Throw Out the Dead Tree

Once Christmas is over, and your tree is dried out, it is important to get rid of it.  Dried out trees are a real fire hazard, so throw it out as soon as possible.

Do you have an artificial tree?

This reduces the chances of a fire hazard, but it is still important to make sure that you check that manufacturer’s label to ensure it is fire retardant.
