Spring HVAC Maintenance: Cleaning, Filters, Ducts
Within the HVAC world, some of the most important times of year are the transitions between seasons. These represent great opportunities to inspect and maintain the system between its major areas of need, plus to address any minor damage that’s taken place over the previous season and make the required repairs (if needed) — and spring is perhaps the top season for many homeowners.
At FLAME Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical, we’re happy to offer a wide range of both commercial and residential heating and cooling services to clients throughout Michigan, including spring inspections and maintenance appointments that we strongly recommend to all our clients each year. Whether on your own or with the help of our team, what are some of the most important areas to be keeping in mind as you inspect and evaluate your system this spring? This two-part blog series will go over everything you need to know.
Clear Debris from Outdoor Unit
One of the first things to be doing once the weather gets a bit warmer at the start of spring is clearing away any debris that may have built up around your outdoor HVAC unit over the winter. Not only does this help improve airflow and cooling efficiency, but it’s also just good general practice to keep dirt and leaves from building up and potentially causing damage down the line.
While you’re at it, inspect this unit for any damage that may have occurred over the winter. Make sure the casing is still intact, there are no broken or missing parts, and that all wiring is in good condition. If you do spot any damage, be sure to call a professional to make the required repairs as soon as possible.
Replace Filters
To be clear, HVAC filter replacement is a theme that should be maintained throughout the year in any home. It often takes on even greater importance in some homes during spring, however, as pollen counts can be quite high and cause all sorts of respiratory issues for allergy sufferers.
Replace filters at least every 3 months, or more often if needed. Be sure to choose the right type and size of filter for your system, as using the wrong one can actually do more harm than good.
Clean Your Ducts
Whether on your own or through professional duct cleaning services, be sure to clean your ducts at least once a year. This is especially important if you have pets or if there’s been any construction or renovation work done in your home recently. Dust and dirt can easily build up in ducts, causing all sorts of problems with airflow and heating/cooling efficiencies.
In part two of our series, we’ll go over a number of additional tips. For more on this, or to schedule a spring HVAC inspection with our team, contact us at FLAME Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical today.
