Electrical, Plumbing, and General Safety in a Thunderstorm
Summer is definitely thunderstorm season, and while some of us may really enjoy the loud claps of thunder and bright flashes of lighting that a storm brings, it is prudent to keep in mind that these storms can be quite dangerous. According to the American Red Cross, “Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes” (Thunderstorm Safety). In order to stay safe during a thunderstorm, the American Red Cross recommends the following emergency preparedness kit:
Water—one gallon per person, per day
̶ Food—non-perishable, easy-to-prepare
̶ Flashlight
̶ Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
̶ Extra batteries
̶ First aid kit
̶ Medications (7-day supply) and medical items
̶ Multi-purpose tool
̶ Sanitation & personal hygiene items
̶ Copies of personal documents
̶ Cell phone with chargers
̶ Family & emergency contact information
̶ Extra cash
Though the American Red Cross does not have this in their kit, having an automatic generator during a thunderstorm can also help to keep your family safe and comfortable.
During a thunderstorm the American Red Cross also urges you to take cover and avoid all plumbing; do not take a bath or shower. For more information from the American Red Cross about storm safety, check out their website.
