What To Do If Your Pipes Freeze

We’ve had a fairly mild winter so far, but things are about to get chilly. The nice thing—if it can be said that there is a nice thing about getting chillier—is the number of warm comments customers have been leaving us online. This makes all the difference in the world to us and it’s why we’ve been pushing all of our employees to uphold what we call FLAME Difference. As a customer, you have a number of companies to choose from for your heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical needs, so we’ve gone to great lengths to listen to what you’re saying and offer you top notch service that you won’t find anywhere else.

Here’s a sample of a recent comment: “I believe in the old saying, ‘You get what you pay for.’ I used FLAME for a furnace installation and I am completely satisfied with the results. Not only did Todd, Jason and the other specialists do a perfectly clean and complete installation, they also brought my water heater up to code and addressed several other plumbing issues. I was happy to pay a premium price for premium work. Thank You FLAME.”

That’s a nice warm breeze before an otherwise upcoming chilly weekend. And speaking of chilly, we’ve had a couple of questions come our way recently that we thought we’d have one of our certified techs answer for you.

1) What do I do if my central heating and hot water stop working?

First, you’ll want to shut off the gas supply to each appliance, then drain the system and leave the main drain open. By leaving it open, there’s room for expansion in case of a freeze. The important thing to remember is to perform these functions only if you already know how to do them. If not, you want to contact FLAME immediately at (888) 234-2340 for assistance.

2) What do I do if the pipe on my boiler freezes?

If the pipes freeze, open the main drain. This will help protect against the pipe cracking due to expansion. You’ll also want to shut the main water off to prevent additional water from collecting in the pipes.

3) What can I do about frozen pipes?

Again, first make sure the system drain is open. Second, shut off the main water supply to prevent flooding as the pipes thaw. Finally, call a licensed contractor to come in and inspect pipes for damage prior to filling.
