Why is Too Much Humidity Bad for Sleep?

Southeastern Michigan is ready to be hit with yet another blast of heavy rain this week.  After a summer of rain and all that comes with it: flooded basement, flooded roads, humidity, and mold growth, most of us are tired of this wet weather.  For those with basements prone to flooding, it is recommended that in advance of the rains you remove as many items of value as possible out of the basement.

Another side effect of all of this rain?  How too much humidity can impact our sleep.  Anyone who has ever spent the night on a lumpy mattress can attest to the fact that some sleep environments are better than others.  While we often think of temperature, mattress firmness, and darkness as the key contributors to the perfect sleep, humidity also plays a role.

Last year we published a post detailing how your home’s humidity levels can impact sleep, and as we once again, sit in our homes and watch the rain fall, it seems pertinent to share that information again.

Why is too much humidity bad for sleep?

1. A high humidity level makes the temperature feel warmer than it actually is, and it can prevent your body from cooling down.  It is difficult for moisture from your body to evaporate into air already full of water.

2. High humidity levels can lead to mold growth, triggering allergic reactions that make it hard to sleep.

3. It’s downright uncomfortable when you, your sheets, and your pajamas all feel damp and sticky.

How do you fix too much humidity?

Try using a dehumidifier.  You can find portable versions for each individual room, or you can invest in a whole home dehumidifier that operates using your home’s HVAC system.  The ideal humidity level for inside your house is considered to be 30-50%.  On the flip side, if you find that during winter months, your home is becoming much dryer than those recommended humidity levels, using a humidifier will add moisture to your air and help keep the home comfortable.
