5 Ways to Beat the Heat in Metro Detroit

The summer of 2012 has been like few others. It’s been the hottest summer in recent memory and if forecasts are any indication, it doesn’t appear to be ending too soon. And while temperatures in mid-80s aren’t as bad as the triple digits we were seeing, let’s face it–it’s still hot. But that heat, despite its intensity, should not deter you from enjoying the splendors the Metro-Detroit area has to offer. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite ways to beat the heat in Southeast Michigan.

Lake St. Clair

While Lake St. Clair is definitely not a Great Lake, it’s a pretty darn good one that has a lot to offer, especially on those hot summer days. One of the best ways to take advantage of the lake is to jump in! There are few things as refreshing as diving into a big, cold body of water when it’s 95 degrees outside. We recommend a trip to the Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township. It’s one of the premier swimming spots along the shore and offers you and your family a day full of swimming, grilling and more.

Detroit water parks

Did you know that there are several water parks in the Metro area? Like Lake St. Clair Metropark, water parks are another great place to take your family during a sweltering summer day. Metro Parent listed their top 10 water parks in Metro Detroit, many of which are not only affordable, but a place that will keep you and your family cool, no matter what the temperature is.

Belle Isle

It sits right in the middle of the Detroit River between Michigan and Canada, but it often goes unnoticed to many Metro Detroit residents. Not only is Belle Isle America’s largest city-owned park, but it has playgrounds, museums, a conservatory and more than five miles of scenic coastline for you to enjoy. If you’re looking to spend a warm day outside somewhere with a breeze and a great view, Belle Isle is the place to be. Go to the movies

Summer is primarily known for two things: heat and blockbuster movies. And sometimes, when the former is too intense, it’s time to take a trip indoors to catch a show. Stay inside

Let’s be honest, sometimes the best way to beat the heat with your family is just to stay inside and sit in your home’s A/C.
