How to Prepare Your Thermostat for Daylight Savings Time

It’s that time of year again when we ‘spring forward’ and set our clocks ahead one hour.  This year (2020), daylight savings time occurs on Sunday, March 8 at 2:00 a.m., which means we want to make sure all of our clocks and devices are ready for the change before we head off to bed Saturday night.

In many ways, daylight savings time has become so easy–most of our electronic devices will change time automatically.  However, that doesn’t make it any easier on us to lose that hour of sleep at night!  As the National Sleep Foundation points out, daylight savings time gives us a “…mild case of jet lag.”  Though that foggy feeling usually clears up after a few days, in order to be better prepared, try going to bed early the night before daylight savings time begins.

Another factor that might disrupt your sleep is temperature.  If you use a programmable or smart thermostat, you may be accustomed to waking up to a certain temperature in the morning and falling asleep to a specific temperature in the evening.  If this gets thrown off due to the time change, that can also impact your sleep.

How to Prepare Your Thermostat for Daylight Savings Time

The good news is that most smart and wi-fi enabled thermostats will adjust to the time change automatically, meaning that you don’t have to do anything.

Other thermostats may need to be adjusted manually.  We recommend changing the time and programs on these the night before daily savings time to help make Sunday morning easier on you.

Not sure if you need to do anything with your thermostat?  Check your owner’s manual.
