The Weather Channel Tells Us How Early We Can See Snow

Anyone who has lived in Michigan for a few months can attest to the craziness of the weather here. It’s not crazy from phenomena such as hurricanes and typhoons; it is crazy simply by how it can radically change daily. We are talking about bathing suits one day and jackets and scarves the next.

Michigan summers can sometimes stretch into October, with temperatures reaching into the 80’s one day and plummeting down into the 50s during the following one. This can make it hard to get into the fall spirit. And once you finally think it is appropriate fall apple-picking weather, it is possible that you will wake up to find snow on the ground!

The Weather Channel has put together a map of how early in the fall the continental U.S. can see measurable amounts of snow. According to Weather.com, “The National Weather Service considers measurable snow an accumulation of 0.1 inches or more.” This means more than just a few flurries.

When Can Michigan See Snow?

On the map, the Upper Peninsula has seen snow as early September, while Detroit has had measurable snow in mid-October. With that said, as The Weather Channel points out, “How early it can snow in your area depends on simple factors such as geographic location and elevation as well as weather patterns from year to year.”

So, while Southeastern Michigan is in no way guaranteed to see snow in October, the unpredictability of the weather means that you shouldn’t put off getting your home and HVAC system ready for cooler months, even if you are enjoying an October summer day.
