Why Do Air Ducts Need to Be Sealed?

Many homes today have forced air heating and cooling systems that use an air duct system to allow the heated or cooled air to travel around the home.  The problem is that the ducts can have leaks in them and we don’t even realize it.  This means that the air that was just heated or cooled by your furnace or air conditioner escapes before it makes it to its final destination in your house.

When the air leaks, one of the obvious problems is losing money.  However, there are some other issues associated with leaky ducts as well:

  • Rooms aren’t as well heated or cooled, which is uncomfortable
  • The heating and cooling system has to work harder in order to heat or cool your home, which means it will break down sooner
  • Lots of humidity

Some people try and use tape or a mastic to fix leaks in their air ducts, but when you do that, you can only fix the leaks that you can see.  One of the best ways to fix these leaks is through duct sealing.  Aeroseal duct sealing is a new technology that finds and seals leaks in your ducts- even the ones that you cannot see.  According to Aeroseal, with this type of duct sealing your leaks could be reduced by up to 90% and you could lower your energy usage by 30%.

So, why do air ducts need to be sealed?  Not only will doing so save you money on your energy bills, but it will also increase your home’s comfort and extend the life of your heating and cooling system.  For more information about the Aeroseal duct sealing process, contact Flame or check out their website!
