So, your air conditioner won’t turn on. This means that there is a major problem that will end up being very expensive, right? Not necessarily. Before jumping to conclusions or immediately calling for help, here are three places in your home to check out first. These are simple reasons for your why your air conditioner might not be turning on.
Check the thermostat. Is it set to COOL or to a temperature below the current room temp?
Air conditioners can’t read minds so they need to be told when to start cooling. Make sure that your thermostat is properly set in order for the cooling to begin!
Check the Electrical Panel.
Just like with anything else that needs electricity in your home, the fuse could have blown or the breaker could have flipped. Take a look at your electrical panel to see if this is the case. Some cooling systems also have a disconnect box with fuses for the a/c located outside as well. Don’t forget to check that out too, but make sure to turn it off before you do any poking around.
Check the Air Filter.
Furnaces and air conditioners share the same filter so we recommend cleaning or changing the filter at the start of cooling season (and every 3 months throughout the year). A dirty or clogged filter can make it much harder for your air conditioner to do its job and even cause the a/c to not work.
