When Will See a 90 Degree Day in Detroit?

Are you someone more likely to describe 90 degrees Fahrenheit as: sweltering, scorching, stifling, blistering, oppressive and miserable?

Or, do you find a 90 degree day to be warm, desirable, pleasant, refreshing, and enjoyable?

No matter which camp you fall in, sooner or later, metro Detroit will see 90 degrees in the forecast.  But, when will that be?

When is the First 90 Degree Day?

According to The Weather Channel, Detroit is actually one of the later cities in the Midwest to have thermometers record 90 degree temperatures.  While St. Louis and Kansas City have both seen 90 degree days as early as March, a hot day like that in Detroit typically falls around the beginning to middle of June.

In fact records show, that the earliest 90 degrees day ever recorded in Detroit was on May 5, 1895–over a century ago!

Don’t Forget to Prepare

Though we may not have temperatures above the 80s until June in southeastern Michigan, that does not mean that we still won’t have some warm weather before then. Hot weather can be dangerous--especially for the elderly, young children, and pets, so be sure to prepare and know how to keep your loved ones safe and cool.

1. Schedule an air conditioner inspection.

Annual preventative maintenance inspections are the best way to ensure that the unit is running safely and efficiently.

2. Change or clean the filter.

Dirty filters can cause your air conditioner to waste energy, not cool properly, and can even lead to mold growth.

3. Turn on the air conditioner BEFORE the mercury rises too high.

You do not want to find out there is a problem on the hottest day of the year.
