8 Rainy Day Ideas During Quarantine
April showers bring May flowers. April showers can also bring muddy dogs, bored kids, and a feeling of cabin fever. When faced with a rainy day after months of winter we can’t help but groan.
A year ago we compiled a list of fun Detroit activities to do on a rainy day. However, because of the current COVID-19 pandemic none of those suggestions will work this year on a rainy April day. So, what can you do when the weather stinks but you can’t leave your home?
8 Rainy Day Ideas During Quarantine
1. Get outside anyway
Yes, it is wet, and it may be a little bit chilly, but go outside anyways. Take your dog for a walk or let your kids splash in puddles a la Peppa Pig. The fresh air will do you good.
2. Window painting
This is an easy activity that can be done with children of multiple ages. In fact, many adults may enjoy it as well. Simply mix tempera paint with a little bit of dish soap to make an easy to wash off paint for your windows. Then, paint a colorful display that will brighten up both the inside and outside of your home. During these times, a little extra brightness and color doesn’t hurt.
3. Learn a hobby
Is there something that you’ve been meaning to learn? Knitting, crocheting, sewing? There’s no better time than a rainy day spent in quarantine.
4. Exercise
You can’t head to the gym, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your sweat on and get a good workout in. Websites such as Fitness Blender offer free workout videos for all levels that vary from strength training to HIIT to barre and pilates.
GoNoodle is a great website that gets kids up and moving as well.
5. Check out The Detroit Zoo online
We may not be able to visit our animal friends at the Detroit Zoo in person, but we can still keep up with them. The Detroit Zoo is offering live footage of the penguins, wolves, otters, snow monkeys, and falcons, as well as a myriad of educational videos as part of their Virtual Vitamin Z campaign.
6. Make bread
Many of us can agree that carbs are often the best kind of comfort food. What is better than warm baked bread? If you have been struggling with empty shelves at grocery stores, one of the best part of bread is that it does not require many ingredients. Basic recipes typically only ask for flour, water, yeast, milk, sugar, and perhaps oil.
7. Start your (online) Christmas shopping early
Remember how every year you vow to be ahead of the game with holiday shopping? Here is your opportunity–online, of course.
8. Build a fort
Quarantine or not, rainy days call for forts. Here are some creative examples to give you inspiration, but traditional blankets and pillows also work just as well. Grown ups–if you don’t have any kids at home right now, we promise we won’t judge if you still decide to make a fort–the kids can’t have all of the fun!
