10 Ways to Celebrate Energy Awareness Month

Did you know that October isn’t just for pumpkins and ghost stories?  It’s not a month solely dedicated to a little too much candy and dressing up in costumes.  October has also been designated by the United States Department of Energy as Energy Awareness Month.  Since it’s dedication in 1991 by President George Bush, Americans have used the month of October to learn about energy conservation and to make changes that impact our own energy usage.

There are hundreds of ways that you can save energy on a daily basis.  Some require a large amount of commitment on your part, while others require barely any effort at all.  We want to encourage you to think about your own energy usage, and how it can be improved upon.  Are there any energy saving projects you’ve been wanting to do but have been putting off?  Now is the perfect time!

Tell others about Energy Awareness Month to spread the word and increase overall energy savings

2. In many places, October is the perfect time of year to turn off the air conditioner, but still not start up the furnace.  Enjoy a few weeks with some open windows or extra blankets.

3. Switch out all of your lightbulbs for LED lightbulbs.  While you’re at it, get ahead of the game and replace all of your Christmas lights with LEDs as well.

4. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth (and make sure your kids are doing it too!)

5. Install low flow faucets and shower heads in the bathroom

6. Bring a reusable water bottle and coffee mug with you to work instead of using up plastic or cardboard cups.

7. Make sure all windows in your home are properly sealed.

8. Invest in a programmable thermostat or smart learning thermostat.

9. Unplug devices such as televisions that give off phantom charges even when not in use.

10. Turn down the temperature on your hot water tank.
