3 Reasons Why Your Home’s Water is Too Hot

Usually when you have a hot water heater problem at home–the problem is that the there isn’t any hot water.  Sometimes, though, the pendulum can swing the other direction and the problem is that the water is too hot.  On the surface this may not seem like a serious issue, but when water heaters heat the water to too high of temperatures, the effects can include dangerous scalds, or burns caused by water or steam.

Young children and the elderly are especially susceptible to scalds from hot liquids, and in certain situations the scalds can even be life-threatening.

Additionally, if you find that you water at home is burning hot, this can signify a problem with your hot water heater.

Why is the Water Too Hot?

1. The Thermostat is Set Too High

This is the most simple explanation, and it is the easiest one to fix.  The thermostat on your hot water heater may simply be set too high.  Many manufacturers have a default setting of 140 degrees Fahrenheit, but Healthline informs us that, “Tap water burns are more likely if your water heater is set above 120°F.”

Setting the thermostat back to 120 degrees will not only make your home safer, it will also save you money on your utility bills.  Please take note, double check your thermostat if you have a technician or someone from your gas company come and re-light the pilot light–they may automatically set the temperature back to manufacturer’s settings.

2. The Thermostat is Broken

If adjusting the thermostat does not fix the problem, then you may need to fix or replace your thermostat.  With gas water heaters the thermostat is connected to the gas valve piece.  Therefore, we recommend that you call for professional help.

3. High Mineral Count in Water

If you know that your home’s tap water has a high mineral count, this can definitely account for overheated water.  When the minerals build up on the heating elements of the water heater they can cause corrosion and malfunction.  In order to fix this, flush out the water tank and replace the heating elements.
