7 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know about the First Day of Spring

Happy spring!  This year, the Vernal Equinox, or first day of spring occurs on March 20, 2021.  Other years it happens a day later or earlier.  In honor of the official end of winter–at least as far as the calendar goes–we thought we would share seven little known facts about the first day of spring.

1. It’s time to get out the bubbles

The beginning of spring is also marked by National Bubble Week in the United States.

2. The day and night hours are equal…almost

On this day, the hours of daylight and hours of darkness are equal–12 and 12. (or at least as close as they are going to get).

3. Meteorological spring actually starts March 1

March 20 marks the start of astronomical spring.  That means, this date is determined by the earth’s tilt toward the sun.  Weather forecasters and researchers actually use March 1 as the start of spring.

4. It’s the start of fall in Southern Hemisphere

Spring may be springing here, but March 20 means it is time for those in the Southern Hemisphere to begin winter preparations.

5. You should probably buy some eggs

Lore has it that due to the gravitational pulls of the sun and moon on the vernal equinox, that you can actually stand an egg upright and it will balance.  Wonder if it’s true?  Give it a try yourself!

6. It’s the most common time to buy/sell a house

7. Add tissues to the shopping list too

Unfortunately for many people, the first day of spring ushers in the start of seasonal allergies.  Pollen is usually the culprit of the congestion, scratchy throat, and runny nose that come with these allergies.  Check with your doctor about medications and others ways to ease the symptoms, and don’t forget to read up on ways to keep those symptoms at bay inside your home.
