9 Detroit Winter Activities to Get You Out of the House
Most Detroit winter days are filled with gray skies, cold temperatures, and either rain or snow. The weather outside often makes us prefer to stay warm and cozy in our homes rather than venturing out if we don’t have to.
But, cozy days can only happen fir so long before the cabin fever sets in… and, if you have young children in your home–that stir-craziness can show up pretty early in the day.
This winter, check out some of these activities and events happening around Detroit. It will be good to leave the house…we promise!
9 Detroit Winter Activities to Get You Out of the House
1. Detroit Winter Blast
Sponsored by Quicken Loans, this event will run on weekends from January 19 and February 17. Roast marshmallows, look at ice sculptures, slide down the winter slide, and eat delicious food. Admission is free.
2. Ice skating at Campus Martius
Take the family, take a date, or head to the rink solo. Ice skating is available at Campus Martius Park 7 days per week.
3. Fowling
Football + Bowling = Fowling. Instead of the traditional bowling set-up, fowling consists of two teams playing across from each other and trying to knock down pins with a football. Try out this new game at the Fowling Warehouse in Hamtramck.
4. Feather Bowling
Traditionally a Belgian sport, Feather Bowling can be played at Detroit’s Cadieux Cafe. Even if you aren’t interested in rolling balls shaped like cheese wheels, you can still snack on some mussels and listen to live music.
5. The Detroit Zoo
Did you know that the Detroit Zoo is even open during the winter months? So, bundle up and go say hello to the animals this winter! Bonus–it probably won’t be very crowded.
6. DNR Outdoor Adventure Center
Imagine camping, hiking, or fishing in northern Michigan. Now, imagine doing all of that from one building in downtown Detroit. The DNR Outdoor Adventure Center introduces you to the beauty of outdoor Michigan. Walk across a swinging bridge, reel in a big fish, and even cook dinner over a “campfire” at the OAC.
7. Pop + Offworld Arcade
This pizza place/bar/arcade offers something for the kids and for the grown ups! Play classic arcade games while snacking on New York style pizza.
8. 2019 North American International Auto Show
This winter event is a Detroit classic. Taking place from January 19-27 at Cobo Center, the NAIAS features “the vehicles and technologies that will shape the future automotive landscape.”
9. Belle Isle-Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory
Itching to get outside without freezing your tail off? Instead of waiting until spring time, take a trip to Belle Isle. The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is filled with rare and exotic plants, and is warm inside too!
