Carbon Monoxide Awareness

As we venture into the winter months, more and more Michigan residents will begin using their heaters and furnaces. While infrequent, this is the time to be aware of Carbon Monoxide poisoning – its symptoms and more importantly, how to avoid it.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless gas that is generated whenever fuel is burned.  Typically, and with well-ventilated areas, it is not a problem.  However, with older furnaces, homes where ventilation is not present, or simply a defect of some sort, Carbon Monoxide poisoning could occur.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning include:

• headache
• weakness
• shortness of breath
• nausea
• confusion
• death

Often mistaken for the flu, it is important to recognize the symptoms.  If several people in the home simultaneously experience the same symptoms, and you have recently begun using a gas furnace or some other burning fuel in or near the home, vacate the premises and contact your local fire department.  They can quickly check for CO levels and determine if it is cause of the symptoms.

Better yet, there are some simple things you can do to protect you and your loved ones from CO poisoning.

• Purchase 1 or more certified CO detectors and place strategically around your home;
• Insure proper ventilation near fuel burning appliances;
• Have a professional perform an inspection on your fuel burning appliances – gas dryers, furnaces, etc.;
• Always have a professional install fuel burning appliances;

These simple steps will keep you and your family safe as you move into the cooler winter months.
