Why is the Computer Room So Cold?

On hot summer days you may find yourself escaping to your office’s computer room.  Typically these rooms are much cooler than the rest of the building, and they offer respite from a steamy July day.  They are extra cool for a reason, however.  These rooms hold special equipment, and they need to be cooled in specific ways.  Generally there are two different kinds of computer rooms: server rooms and computer rooms.  Server rooms contain the hard drives and data storage banks, while computer rooms have the office’s servers and printers.  Because these two rooms are different, they need to be cooled in different ways.

Whether your office building is very large or very small, server rooms need a separate cooling unit from the rest of the building.  They have a tendency to really heat up, which is why it is important to have a cooling unit meant for that room. Often, this room stores important data for your company, so you definitely do not want the server room to overheat.

A computer room that house printers and servers needs a complex cooling system called a Liebert System.  This system uses water instead of air to cool,  which allows the room to remain at a more constant temperature. The Liebert System also works to maintain appropriate humidity for the room.
