How many of you treat your garbage disposal as a mythical hero that can dispose of anything? Â Guilty. Â Many of us forget that our garbage disposals do have limits, and that there are certain items that should not head down it. Â Here is a list of some common foods that should not be put down the garbage disposal.
- Grease, Oil or Fat-when it cools, it can harden and clog the drain.
- Starchy or String Vegetables (potato peels, celery, rhubarb, asparagus, chard, kale, or artichokes)- these can get caught around the blade.
- Pasta-it can keep expanding when wet and clog the drain
- Egg shells-these have a thin membrane inside that can end up wrapped around the blade
- Rice-this can also expand and clog the drain
- Coffee Grounds-coffee grounds can end up stuck in the garbage disposal trap
- Fruit Pits or Seeds-these will only hurt the garbage disposal
- Bones-a garbage disposal is not strong enough to handle any more than fish bones. Â Bones will just get caught.
