How many of you treat your garbage disposal as a mythical hero that can dispose of anything? Guilty. Many of us forget that our garbage disposals do have limits, and that there are certain items that should not head down it. Here is a list of some common foods that should not be put down the garbage disposal.
- Grease, Oil or Fat-when it cools, it can harden and clog the drain.
- Starchy or String Vegetables (potato peels, celery, rhubarb, asparagus, chard, kale, or artichokes)- these can get caught around the blade.
- Pasta-it can keep expanding when wet and clog the drain
- Egg shells-these have a thin membrane inside that can end up wrapped around the blade
- Rice-this can also expand and clog the drain
- Coffee Grounds-coffee grounds can end up stuck in the garbage disposal trap
- Fruit Pits or Seeds-these will only hurt the garbage disposal
- Bones-a garbage disposal is not strong enough to handle any more than fish bones. Bones will just get caught.
