How to Tell if Your Furnace is Too Old

During the winter months you may start asking questions about your furnace.  Maybe your utility bills seem steep or maybe you hear a funny sound whenever the furnace comes on, or maybe you just can’t quite remember when it was last replaced.  Whatever the reason, when the temperatures drop we want to make sure that our homes are as prepared as possible, which is why we may begin to ask:  Is my furnace old?  Has it reached its prime?

Is my furnace too old?  Let’s see…

Was your current furnace around for the 2005 Olympics in Greece?

Does your furnace remember the disastrous effects of Hurricane Katrina?

Does your furnace pre-date the invention of YouTube?

Was your furnace around for the release of Brokeback Mountain?

Did your furnace witness the confirmation of Condoleeza Rice as US Secretary of State?

Was your furnace just as surprised as you when Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah Winfrey’s couch?

Did you have your current furnace when Pope John Paul II died?

If, Yes…

If you are answering yes to any of the above questions, then you may be in the market for a new furnace.  Typically furnaces have a lifespan of around 14-20 years.  Well maintained ones generally last on the longer end of the spectrum, which is why it is so important to keep up with yearly maintenance inspections.

Though age of the furnace is important, the biggest aspect to consider is how well it is working for you.  Even if your furnace is not technically “too old,” it may still be less efficient than you would like.  As a rule, newer models tend to be more energy efficient, which leads to greater savings throughout the year on utility bills.  Also, if you find that your furnace troubles are making you a frequent flyer with your local HVAC company then you may want to start thinking about replacement options.

The Takeaway

Though there is a specific lifespan for furnaces, the lifespan is a broad age range and there are more factors than just years to consider.
