How to Prepare for Winter Power Outages

As we head into winter and the temperatures get colder, certain weather concerns can seem much more serious.  For example, though losing power in the summer could be quite uncomfortable and potentially dangerous depending on the outside temperatures, losing power in the winter could result in frozen and burst pipes as well as adverse health affects due to exposure. Perhaps I have been reading too much about Hurricane Sandy along the East coast, but I have been ruminating on keeping your home safe and comfortable even if the weather is unpredictable.

One of the best ways to protect your home is through the use of an automatic standby generator.  An automatic generator will turn on as soon as it senses that the power in the home has been lost.  It will continue running and does not need to constantly refueled.  In the winter, this means saving you cold, dark trips outside.  An automatic generator can also protect your home if you are not there.  If you are out of town and power is lost, your pipes could freeze and therefore burst.  A generator will prevent that from happening.

Automatic generators do consist of a higher initial investment than a portable generator which might not sound that appealing.  A portable generator will still definitely be helpful during a power outage though it will not be as convenient. In addition, many automatic generators can power more appliances  than a portable generator.  If neither of these are an option for you, it is incredibly important that in the event of a power outage you want to make sure to stock up on:

  • Water
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Candles
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Blankets
