Why You Shouldn’t Shower During a Thunderstorm

There are over 16 million thunderstorms worldwide each year.  While most of us have probably experienced quite a few in our lifetimes, there’s still plenty that average person doesn’t actually know about storms.  For example, did you know that thunder is a sound produced by lightning?  This means that even if you only hear thunder (and don’t see any lightning flashes), there is still lightning somewhere.  Something else you may not have realized?  It is dangerous to shower during a thunderstorm.

What does my shower have to do with a storm?

It’s all about the lightning.  Lightning carries a strong electric current that can travel through pipes and water–both of which exist in the shower.  If lightning strikes nearby, that current could travel through pipes and water to strike you. This could result in passing out, tingling, numbness, or death. While experts agree that this is a fairly rare occurrence, the consequences of choosing to shower during a thunderstorm could be very serious.

What are the other thunderstorm don’ts?

For the same reasons that you should not shower during a thunderstorm, you also should not wash your hands, do the dishes, or take a bath.  Furthermore, lightning can even travel through landline phone lines, so it is best to stick to your cell phone while it is storming.

In fact, you want to avoid using anything that is plugged into the wall such as computer, laptops, or charging cell phones during a thunderstorm as the electric current can run through it.  Before a storm begins, it is also a good idea to unplug electronic devices in order to protect them from any electric surges.
