Why You Should Worry About Your Dog Peeing on the Air Conditioner

In these days of staying at home and sheltering in place many dogs are living ‘their best life.’  Dogs are suddenly getting to go on multiple walks per day, they have all of their people home with them, and fetch has become a new favorite activity for everyone in the family–four legged and two legged members.

With all of this extra outside time your furry friend is getting, we want to remind you to make sure that Fido is not getting too close to the air conditioner.  When dogs mistake the outside condenser unit of the a/c for a fire hydrant it can create some pretty serious problems.  The urine can eat away at the metal exterior and eventually at the condenser coil that contains refrigerant.  Some tell tale signs of dogs peeing on the air conditioner include yellow, red, or brown rusty spots on the air conditioner.

How Can I Stop My Dog from Peeing on the Air Conditioner?

Dog owners know that once their dog finds a favorite place to use as a restroom it is hard to deter him from it!  Here are a few ideas to prevent the air conditioner from being used as a men’s or ladies’ room:

1. Physically Block the Air Conditioner

Place a fence around the unit or use landscaping to keep your dog away.  Check out some ideas here.

2. Use a spray meant to deter pets from having accidents.

These can usually be found at your local pet store.

3. Choose the A/C’s Location Wisely

If you are installing a new unit, ask your consultant about possible locations for the condenser unit to see if it can be placed along the side of the home or somewhere else that your dog cannot easily access.

This Post is About Dogs, But…

If you have a recently potty trained toddler boy, please note that their urine is not good for the air conditioner either.
