5 Indoor Activities to Help Your Sanity in Cold Weather

Yes, yes we’ve all heard the saying that ‘there is no bad weather, only bad clothes,’ right?  Well, sometimes there is bad weather, and sometimes it is just too dang cold to exercise or play outside.  In years past families have combatted the boredom of needing to be inside by going to movie theaters, heading to the mall, or having large gatherings.  While we are still living with the Covid-19 pandemic, some of those options may no longer be available, or families may not feel comfortable with traditional public indoor activities.

Cold weather is in the forecast for Michigan, so here are few ways to stay safe and stay sane while still having fun at home.

5 Indoor Activities to Help Your Sanity in Cold Weather

This list consists of a variety of activities including some for adults, kids, and the whole family.

1. Bring some winter inside with you

Even if it is too chilly to spend a long time playing outside in the snow, you can still bring some of the white stuff inside with you.  Fill a plastic tub with snow and bring it in for your kids to play with inside.  Children should still wear mittens or gloves, and placing a waterproof tablecloth under the bucket is a good idea in case some of that snow escapes.  Kids (and grownups!) can make snowballs, tiny snow angels, and even build a snowman.

Alternatively, use that snow to make snow ice cream or maple syrup candy.  Yum!

2. Check out your library

You local library may not be open for in-person visitors, but it is sure to have plenty of online resources.  Check out that book you’ve been meaning to read or find an audiobook that the whole family will enjoy listening to.  Many libraries are also offering free virtual programs and lectures that you can tune into.

3. Dust off those baking skills

When quarantine began in Spring 2020 it seemed like over night everyone became a baker.  Thankfully, baking ingredients are easier to come by now, and baking up some yummy treats is a great way to pass the time and cheer up a cold and gloomy day.  If you are looking for a simple recipe to try with kids, try this recipe for Bread in a Bag from Busy Toddler.

4. Pull out the board games

A classic for a reason, and an activity that can be suited for any age group.  Whether you have a heated game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos or an intense Monopoly match, you’ll remember just how much fun board games can be.

5. Paint and Sip at home

It may not be possible to head out for a traditional ‘paint and sip’ experience, but you can still pop open a bottle and paint a masterpiece in the comfort of your own home through virtual classes.

When the temperatures get really cold, the best thing you can do is stay inside a heated building.  If your furnace stops working, do not hesitate to contact us at FLAME Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electrical.
