The Breakdown: Portable Humidifiers vs. Whole Home Humidifiers

We know that humidifiers can help us with our dry skin and even bring down heating costs a bit, but now the question is, what’s the difference between a portable humidifier and a whole home humidifier?  Portable humidifiers are small units that can be purchased at a hardware store or even a grocery store.  They need to be filled with water to operate and are placed out in the open in a room.  On the other hand, whole home humidifiers are built in to your forced air furnace or steam heat system.  So why should you choose a whole home humidifier?  Here are four reasons:

1. Portable humidifiers need to be filled with water in order to work.  You will have to be constantly refilling them, while whole home humidifiers are fairly low maintenance and only have a pad that needs to be changed every year.
2. In order to regulate the humidity throughout your home many portable humidifiers would have to be purchased whereas a whole home humidifier can easily control the humidity of the entire home.
3. People do not see whole home humidifiers which make them more visually pleasing than a portable humidifier sitting out in every room.
4. Portable humidifiers can be knocked over and make a big mess.  Also, they can be quite noisy!
