4 Common Household Electrical Hazards

Electricity can be a double edged sword.  On one side, electricity has made our lives today so much easier.  Think- light bulbs, television, microwave ovens, and toasters.  How many of us have spent a Friday night eating microwave popcorn while watching a movie?  On the other side, whenever electricity is involved, there is always a very real risk of danger.  In order to help keep you and your family safe, here is a list of 4 common household electrical hazards and how you can avoid them.

Uncovered electrical outlets

Most families with young children are very aware of the potential dangers of leaving electrical outlets exposed.  Kids are curious, and before you know it, they will find a way to stick a paper clip or some other metal object into the outlet.  Therefore, if you have young kids in your home keep your outlets covered.  You can buy plastic covers that plug into the outlet, or install tamper resistant outlets in your home.

Old Wiring

Old electrical wiring just doesn’t sound safe, does it?  Well, it’s not.  If your home’s wiring is over 30 years old, it is recommended that it is inspected by an electrician every year.  Furthermore, we should all pay attention to our home’s wiring-old or not.  According to SafeWise Home Security, “The National Fire Prevention Association reports that faulty wiring is the leading cause of residential fires. To minimize these risks, have a certified electrician check your home’s wiring every few years so you know if any need to be repaired or replaced.”

Water Near Electricity

Electricity and water just don’t mix.  Don’t use any appliances near the bath tub, such as a radio or hair dryer.  Also, if your hands are wet, dry them off before plugging anything in or unplugging.  If you get water on an appliance, do not unplug it right away.  Instead, head to the fuse box and turn off the electricity or the outlet before unplugging it.

Improper Extension Cord Use

The Electrical Safety Foundation International says, “Roughly 3,300 home fires originate in extension cords each year, killing 50 people and injuring about 270 more.”  Before using an extension cord make sure it is meant for indoor or outdoor use, whatever you are using it for.  Also, take a good look at it.  Does it look frayed or worn?  Then, throw it out!  Avoid using extension cords under mats or rugs as people have a tendency to walk on top and cause damage.  For more extension cord tips, click here.
