How a Dog Can Damage an Air Conditioner

Anyone who has a dog knows that a major aspect of dog ownership is potty training.  You may have worked hard to train your four-legged friend to go to the bathroom outside, but what you may not have realized is that you may need to work on training your dog where to go outside, or, more specifically- where NOT to go.  You want to make sure that your dog’s business does not end up on your air conditioner.

Why?  The urine can eat away at the metal eventually leading to eating away at the condenser coil, which contains the refrigerant, located inside.  If this happens- the air conditioner will not work properly.

What can be done to stop this?  Try to avoid having your dog urinate on the air conditioner by…

  • Training your dog to not urinate on the air conditioner
  • Using a spray to deter the dog from urinating on the air conditioner
  • Placing a fence around the air conditioner
  • Planting bushes or shrubs around the air conditioner
  • If, you are installing a new air conditioner, or building a new home, request that the condenser unit be placed along the side of the home instead of in the backyard

If you have a dog and you are not sure whether or not the air conditioner has been damaged take a look for reddish brown/yellow rust spots located in a specific area close to the ground.  If you find these telltale signs, contact FLAME to learn about what your options are.
