How to Entertain Kids during Christmas Break (and Save Energy!)

School is out for Christmas break!  While most kids are probably ecstatic, parents may be a little less so.  Christmas break means two weeks of kids at home.  And, two weeks of kids at home while the weather is cold and gray, which means:  two weeks of kids at home inside.  You don’t need to run away in fear, however.

If you are looking for ways to keep your kids entertained this break, here a few ideas to help.  Kids of all ages can enjoy these activities and some activities can even help to teach about energy saving practices.  Win-win!

How to Entertain Kids during Christmas Break (and Save Energy!)

Make a Homemade Draft Stopper

This is a very simple craft that even the youngest kids can help with!  You can pick out new fabric, or use some old, long socks.  Simply fill with uncooked rice, sew together, and decorate.  These can be used throughout your home at every drafty window or door.  This is a simple and fun way to save energy and stay sane over the holiday break.  For more in-depth directions, click here.

Whip Up Gingerbread Play Dough

Mmm play dough that smells delicious and is pretty easy to make?  Sign me up!  Give your kids a rolling pin, some cookies cutters, and maybe even an apron and have them creating away in their own bakery.  Click here for the full recipe.  Unlike real cookie dough, this gingerbread play dough can be saved and re-used.

Paint a Glow in the Dark Lightbulb

The mom behind the blog, “Left Brain Craft Brain” shares some creative ideas to help teach her preschooler about saving energy.  Using glow in the dark paint to paint a lightbulb drawing is a great way to show how the light needs energy in order to glow, just like our own lightbulbs.

Have an Indoor Camp Out

This is the perfect opportunity to save some energy by turning down the heat and turning off the TV.  Pull out those sleeping bags and a tent or teepee if you have one.  You can always create your own shelter out of chairs and blankets.  Light the fireplace and roast marshmallows, or make them in the microwave.  Turn off the lights and use flashlights.  Kids will love this extra special time together.
