How to Fix a Noisy Air Conditioner

Birds chirping, cicadas buzzing, children giggling, even the sound of a lawn mower from down the street–all are the pleasant sounds of summer.  What’s not so pleasant?  A loud air conditioning unit interrupting your backyard barbecue.

You may think that nothing can be done about that nuisance, short of turning the noisy air conditioner off.  However, we are here with a few simple tips to help keep your summer calm and peaceful.

How to Fix a Noisy Air Conditioner

1. Invest in a new air conditioner

The truth is that older air conditioning units are less efficient and noisier.  So, if the noise is really bothering you and you have had your AC for 10-15 years, it may be time to consider investing in the new one.

2. Choose a better place for the new AC

If you choose to take the plunge and purchase a new air conditioning unit, speak with your contractor about where you would like the outside condenser unit to be located.  If it is currently located right next to your deck or patio perhaps a better less used location around your home can be found.

3. Install a barrier

Of course, installing a new air conditioner is not the right choice for everyone.  If this isn’t the year for a new AC, there are other options to dampen some of that sound.  Create a barrier around the air conditioner.  This could be achieved via landscaping, or by constructing a fence.  In fact, you can even use an acoustic sound proof blanket attached to your barrier to further decrease the sound.

4. Keep up with maintenance

A well-tuned air conditioner will run better, which also translates to running more quietly.  So, don’t skimp on regular air conditioner maintenance.  We recommend an annual maintenance inspection each spring for air conditioners as well as an annual inspection for furnaces.
