How to Hygge Up Your Home for a Cozy Living Space

The Danish tradition of hygge (pronounced HOO-GAH) has been gaining popularity in the United States for the past few years.  Defined as, “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being,” embracing hygge this winter seems like something we could all benefit from.

One way to do this is by making your home as cozy and comfortable as possible.  With most of us spending much more time at home than in years past, creating a homey living environment is even more important.  So, let’s take a look at 3 simple ways that you can increase the snug factor of your home this winter.

1. Lighting

Creating a hygge inspired space in your home means doing away with harsh, bright lighting.  Scatter candles around your home for a mellow vibe, or throw up some strands of twinkle lights around the living room.  Lastly, consider installing dimmer switches for overhead lights in order to create a much more relaxed and cozy atmosphere.

2. Temperature

I think we can all agree that being too or being too cold is definitely NOT cozy and NOT comfortable.  Make sure your HVAC system is working properly to achieve that perfect home temperature.  Remember, humidifiers and dehumidifiers can help with that as well.  Tons of throws and soft blankets will help you to stay warm and the textures can create a hygge-like aesthetic.

3. Togetherness

Part of the hygge mindset is togetherness and spending time with the people you love.  Unfortunately, current social distancing practices mean that isn’t always easy to do. Instead of large gatherings, spend quality time with your immediate family–playing games, learning skills etc…. Embrace technology for video chats with others, and fill your homes with pictures of loved ones.  Lastly, remember that you don’t have to be inside to live a hygge life–take the togetherness outside and visit with others on walks or in beautiful parks.
