Save on Your Energy Costs by Unplugging Appliances Not in Use
Cutting costs and saving money are always on the minds of our customers. Some of them will collect change or sign up for grocery store “Super Saver” clubs just to save a little cash. It’s much easier than that, though. One of the simplest ways to keep money in your wallet is to monitor the appliances in your home. Here are some of the easiest ways to do that:
Unplug what you’re not using
Right now, there are probably close to 50 appliances in your home that are plugged-in, even though they aren’t being used. Sure, most of your appliances might only use one or two watts while they’re not in use, but multiply that by 40 or 50, and it could account for 5-10 percent of your electricity, according to the US Department of Energy. If you take into account that some appliances use more energy than others when not in use, like computers and televisions, then imagine the savings by just unplugging any appliance that is not currently in use!
Use power strips and surge protectors
For appliances in the same area–like TVs, DVD and Blu-ray players, stereos and cable boxes–the use of electrical strips can make electricity management easy as pie. By grouping several appliances together, you can just unplug one cord to cut off power to them. And we understand that might sound like a lot of work at first, but once you get into the habit of unplugging all unnecessary appliances, you’ll start seeing the results.
Other ways to save
Aside from unplugging devices not in use, there are other ways to save on energy, too. An easy way is to lower the temperature on your thermostat by one degree, which–believe it or not–can lower your energy costs by nearly 10 percent! And if you’re like some of us and love your hoodies and sweaters, you can lower the temp even more in the winter! Taking short showers and installing low flow shower heads are also great ways to save money on your energy costs. And you know what’s even better about them? They pay for themselves in short order.
There are countless other ways to save money at home, but these are some of the easiest ones to do on your own. If you are interested in learning more ways to save money and make your home more energy efficiency, please contact FLAME!
