What Thanksgiving Items Can Go Down the Garbage Disposal?
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, which means that for many of us, our kitchens will soon be filled with the smell of a turkey roasting and pie being baked. While prepping for and cleaning up after your feast be aware of what things can go down the garbage disposal and what things can’t. Here are some typical things you will find at your dinner table this Thanksgiving and whether or not they can be put down the disposal.
Thanksgiving isn’t Thanksgiving without a turkey! Leftover turkey meat can go down the garbage, but it is best to throw out the bones as they can damage the disposal blades. Also, be careful of any fat or grease from the turkey. Grease and fat can harden in the disposal and cause problems.
2. Mashed Potatoes
I’m not sure why anyone would have leftover mashed potatoes, but if they do-they can go down the disposal. Be careful not to put too many potatoes or potato peels down, however, as they can create a thick paste which will block the drain.
Certain ingredients in stuffing, such as celery stalks and onion skins can be hard on the drain. While making your stuffing, try as much as possible to avoid putting those and other fibrous veggies down the disposal.
4. Pumpkin Pie
If you are making your pumpkin pie from an actual pumpkin and not just a can of pureed pumpkin then you need to read on. The inside of a pumpkin should definitely not go down the disposal. Those pumpkin “guts” can wreak havoc on your drain.
With anything else you may be serving at your dinner table this December, just remember to not put large amounts of food down the disposal at a time. If you do have an issue, do not hesitate to contact FLAME! Click to learn more about our residential plumbing services.
