The Ideal Temperature for Productivity While Working From Home

We have discussed the ever-present debate over office temperatures on this blog before. However, as most of Michigan finds themselves working from home these days after the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order was announced by Governor Whitmer last week, we are here to address the ideal temperature for productivity at home.

With schools also closed, many of us find ourselves in a situation with a full house during the day. This can definitely make getting work done more difficult. Whether it is an issue of not having a space to work, the noise level in the home, or kids needing to use their devices in order to complete their own work for school, productivity is probably lacking during this time.

Unfortunately, we can’t help you build extra office space in your house. However, we can offer one helpful tip to increase your productivity while working from home:  Make sure the thermostat is set at a temperature ideal for productivity.

What is the Best Temperature for Optimal Productivity?

Research shows that the ideal temperature is actually drawn along gender lines. Typically men prefer and are more productive at temperatures below 70 degrees, while women tend to work better at temperatures that fall between 70 and 80 degrees.

But, My Ideal Temperature is Not the Same as My Spouse’s… What Can I Do?

With the whole family working at home, a thermostat battle can definitely ensue. Here are some of our tips for keeping the peace.

If you have a zoned heating or cooling system, now is the time to take advantage of it. These systems allow you to individually heat and cool different zones of your home. If the family is fighting over the temperature, split up by zones.

Default to the women. And this isn’t just a chivalrous move. Research has also indicated that women were more likely to be affected negatively by colder temperatures than men were by warmer ones. So, in this case, the girls win.

Use alternative heating and cooling techniques. This could involve wearing layers, using fans, and opening and closing curtains throughout the day.
