The Weather Channel Names 2018-2019 Winter Storms

Winter storms can be inconvenient, dangerous, and even deadly.  We don’t want to diminish the damaging impacts of winter storms, but we are glass half full kind of people.  So, in addition to cancelled school and hot chocolate, one of the things to look forward to about winter storms is their names.

The Weather Channel has been naming winter storms for the past 7 seasons.  They do so in order to make communication more effective as they track a specific system.  They have just recently released the names that will be used this 2018-2019 season.  Without further ado…

As I mentioned above, winter storms are things we still want to take seriously and be prepared for.  Winter storms are named when they meet or are predicted to meet the National Weather Service criteria for blizzard warnings, ice storm warnings, or winter storm warnings.

Stocking up on food and water and making sure all electronics are charged are good practices for when a warning is announced, but there are things you can do now to be prepared as well.

How to Prepare for a Winter Storm Way Ahead of Time

Add insulation.  Not only will this increase your home’s energy efficiency, in the event of a power outage, it will help the home to retain heat.

Invest in an automatic generator.  These generators turn on automatically as soon as a power outage is sensed.

Buy a shovel.  This may seem like common sense, but shovels can be hard to find once the first big snow hits.

Schedule a furnace inspection.  Furnace inspections ensure that your furnace is running safely and efficiently.  You don’t want to find out you have major problems during the first winter storm.
