Five Ways to ‘Go Green’ on Your Own at Home
The world economy hasn’t been particularly kind the past few years, and though Michigan’s economy is improving better than most states, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still try to save some money. One of the easiest ways to put less of a strain on your wallet, is to “go green” in your home. There are countless ways for you to do this. Here are some of the easiest ways to do it on your own.
Turn off the lights
This is far and away, the easiest thing you can do in your home to save money and go green. Our advice is to get into the habit of turning off the lights every time you leave a room, even if it’s just for 30 seconds. Within no time at all, you’ll be doing it without thinking and saving around 10 percent on your utility bills. On the flip side of this, also try to limit when you actually turn your lights on. By taking advantage of natural light from the sun, you can keep the lights off and save even more money!
Use a programmable thermostat
Another easy way to use less energy in your home is to install a programmable thermostat. These handy devices allow you to control your home’s comfort system better than ever before. By turning your system down at night and while no one is home, your home will consume less energy, making it more efficient. Like turning off your lights, it’s simple changes that won’t just benefit your wallet, but the planet, too.
Plant an herb garden
Do you do a lot of cooking? If you do, you know that nothing helps a dish reach its full potential like fresh herbs or spices. The great thing about herb gardens, is that they can be planted either indoors or outside! That way, you can have fresh basil, oregano, etc. all year round!
Turn off your computers at night
Computers and other electronics often continue to draw power even when they’re in Sleep mode. Because of this, it’s always a good idea to make sure they’re off at the end of the day. You’re not using it, so why waste the power, energy and money to keep it on?
Use less water
Aside from electricity, water is one of the most over-used commodities we have. You can use less water by simply turning it off when you’re brushing your teeth and taking shorter showers. We’ve talked about the importance of using less water before, but it’s important to reiterate. The less water you use, the more money you save.
These are not the only ways to go green in your home, obviously, but they are some of the easiest. What other ways are there to go green at home? Tell us in the comments!
