A month of eating delicious cookies and indulging in treats such as eggnog is wonderful while it happens, but come January 1st we are usually ready to make some resolutions for the New Year. Making decisions to eat healthy and exercise are great, but you can also make resolutions in other areas of your life. Here are few resolutions you can make for your home this year to improve its energy efficiency.
Turn the heat down
This is an easy and very important resolution to make. Agreeing with your family that your home’s heat will be set a little lower this year will allow you to save tremendously. However, be sure that everyone at home is on board with this so you do not have people sneaking to turn the heat up.
Don’t leave the water running
Didn’t your mother ever tell you this? When brushing your teeth or washing your face turn off the faucet while you scrub or brush, then turn it back on again to rinse. Also, if you find that you tend to leave the kitchen sink running waiting for cold water try keeping a pitcher of water in the fridge so that cold water is readily available.
Take shorter showers
Long hot showers waste both water and heat. Use your time in the shower efficiently to thoroughly wash without wasting energy.
Keep the windows closed
When the heating or air conditioning is running keep the windows closed. Additionally, when entering and leaving a home quickly close and open the door so as to not allow the air to escape that way.
Turn off lights
Try to get into the habit of turning out a light whenever you leave a room.
