Springtime is a time for new beginnings, and it is also a time when many people are moving into new homes.  For those who are becoming first time homeowners, there can be a lot of questions about all aspects of homeownership.  FLAME is here to help new homeowners answer some common questions about heating and cooling a house.

How Much Does it Cost to Pay for Heating and Cooling?

This is a big question.  Once you purchase a home, you need to worry about more than just a mortgage payment.  Figuring out how much your utility bills will cost will depend on how often you turn on the heat or a/c and how you use your air conditioners and furnaces.  One thing to keep in mind is that you can cut your heating and cooling costs by investing in programmable thermostats and adjusting the thermostat while you are out of town or at work during the day.  Also, remember to keep doors, windows and chimney flues closed when the furnace or air conditioner is in use.

When and How Often Should I Have my Furnace or Air Conditioner Checked?

Every year!  Typically it is best to have a furnace inspected in the fall and an air conditioner inspected in the spring.

When Will I Need to Replace My Furnace or Air Conditioner?

Usually furnaces last around 20 years, and air conditioners last around 12.  However, older units are less efficient so you may want to consider replacing an older unit sooner in order to enjoy greater energy savings.

When Should I Change the Filter?

The furnace/air conditioner filter should be changed or cleaned every 3 months, depending on what kind of filter you have.  Cleaning or changing the filter regularly makes sure that your furnace and air conditioner are running as efficiently as possible.
