Radiant Heating 101

Some folks are morning people while others are night owls.  No matter what your preferred time of day is, I think we can all agree that the moment when the alarm goes off is never pleasant.  It seems especially bad during the cold winter months when we have to face leaving a warm, cozy bed for a cold room with colder floors.  Radiant heating is a way to solve this chilly problem.  Radiant heat consists of heating a home through the installation of coils under the floor or in the walls of your home.  Though the thought of heated floors on cold mornings may sound tempting enough, there are other reasons to consider radiant heat as well.

Radiant heating can save greater amounts of energy than traditional forced air heating because heated air cannot be lost through the duct work with radiant heating-it goes straight to you and your home!  It is also generally more efficient than baseboard heating, and does not aggravate allergies as much as forced air heating because it does not circulate allergens (U.S. Department of Energy, Radiant Heating).

It is also a convenient way to heat additions to homes without having to hook up the newer portion of the home to the central heating system.  Furthermore, radiant heating can also be installed outside on patios or driveways.  This can eliminate the need for shoveling snow, especially during these long cold Michigan winters.
