3 DIY Projects to Help You Save Money All Year Long

3 simple letters can either make people shrink back in fear or excitedly pick up their hammer or glue gun.

Whether you are a DIY expert, or a DIY rookie, everyone loves to save a little energy (and money).  So, with some help from Energy.gov, here are a few DIY projects for every experience level DIY-er that will help you save money all year long.

Easy Peasy

DIY Draft Blocker

This is a DIY craft that can easily be done at home with your kids.  Though we think of draft blockers mostly being used in the winter, they can also be helpful to save money during those warm summer months as you work to keep the hot and humid air outside.  Check out directions in this blog post.

Insulate Your Hot Water Tank

If you hot water heater is warm to the touch, it can benefit from insulation.  Check out these directions from Energy.gov for how to get started on this project

A Little More Intense

Install Exterior Storm Windows

This is a good project for those who are not in the market for all new windows.  Energy.gov states, “In fact, low-emissivity (low-e) storm windows can lower your utility bill just as much as replacing an entire window.”  Click here for directions.

Even if you don’t want to get your hands dirty at all, there are still things you can easily do at home to help save money on utility bills:

  • Program a programmable thermostat or manually make changes throughout the day
  • Turn lights off whenever you leave a room
  • Turn the water off while brushing your teeth or washing your face.  You can even take things a step further and turn off the water in the shower while shampooing or soaping.
