Is It Seasonal Allergies or Covid-19?

More than a year into the Coronavirus pandemic, many of us are familiar with the common symptoms of Covid-19.  We often get asked about them anytime we go to a routine doctor’s appointment, visit a store, or even dine-in at a restaurant.  For months we have been on high alert for any sign of sickness.

That said, as we enter into spring allergy season more alarm bells may begin to go off as the symptoms of seasonal allergies can closely mimic those of Covid-19.  You may begin to question whether or not you are infected. With any medical questions, it is always best to seek advice from your physician, but here is some information that can help put your mind at ease this allergy season.

How to tell the Difference between Covid-19 and Seasonal Allergies

While both Covid-19 and seasonal allergies can cause coughing, runny noses, headaches, and sore throats there are some symptoms more indicative of one or the other.

Typically seasonal allergies will not cause fever, a loss of taste or smell, body aches, diarrhea, or shortness of breath.  If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical advice. [Source: USA Today]

This spring, if you regularly suffer from seasonal allergies, pay close attention to any symptoms that seem a little bit different from what you usually experience, and don’t hesitate to contact a doctor with any concerns or questions.  WebMD points out, “You can have allergies and a viral infection at the same time.”

Keeping those Allergies Under Control

Allergy sufferers know that spring time can actually be kind of miserable.  This year, we have even more reason to want to keep those pesky symptoms at bay.  Worry about whether a cough or drippy nose might actually be a sign of something more can make us really not to want to have seasonal allergies this year.  Here are our tips to assist you with feeling better.

Keep house and car windows closed–especially on dry, windy days.

Vacuum frequently in your home to reduce the amount of pollen and other allergens.

Install an air purifier and use high quality filters in your HVAC system.

Change clothes after coming back in to the house.

Keep an eye on pollen counts and use that information to help make decisions about outdoor activities.
